Abstract

Il presente saggio intende riassumere brevemente le principali caratteristiche della cosiddetta Digital Death. L’intento del saggio è quello di fare un riassunto delle più importanti trasformazioni digitali in corso che riguardano il fine vita, l’immortalità, l’elaborazione del lutto e la memoria. Pertanto, il saggio descrive le caratteristiche dei cosiddetti “spettri digitali”, evidenzia la natura cimiteriale dei social network, mostra i cambiamenti che le tecnologie digitali determinano nel nostro rapporto con la malattia, analizza le invenzioni hi tech nel campo dei riti funebri. L’obiettivo è fornire al lettore una panoramica generale sull’intromissione delle tecnologie digitali tra la vita e la morte.

Abstract (english)

This essay wants to summarize the main features of the so-called Digital Death. It
aims at highlighting the most important changes now in progress regarding the end
of life, immortality, our grieving process and memory. The essay will therefore
describe the so-called “digital ghosts”, underline the way in which social networks
can be seen as graveyards, show the changes brought about by technology in our
relationship with sickness, analyze high-tech inventions related to funeral rites. The
aim is providing the reader with a general outline of how digital technologies have
gained a role in the relationship between life and death.
